Storing Logs

May 23, 2018

Proper log storage is important for wood fuel. A well ventilated log store is best. Fresh cut logs will dry much faster if stacked in a good store and dry ones will stay dry.

Stacking the logs will ensure they are well ventilated, good ventilation is the most important factor. It’s a good idea to keep some air below them so stacking on old pallets is ideal. A roof or cover to keep the rain off the top and “slatted” or open sides are good for increased ventilation.

A moisture meter is very useful to check if your logs are ready – aim for less than 20% moisture. When testing, always test the surface of a freshly split log. Check out our useful video below doe top tips.

In some European countries people take considerable pride in the design and shape of their log stacks.
