Sweeps warn of spike in chimney fires

February 3, 2021

Leading chimney sweeps warn of a spike in chimney fires this February and March.

Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps chairman Lawson Wight said: ‘The combination of lockdown and cold weather means people are at home using their fires for many more hours per week. Unfortunately for some, this will result in a potentially dangerous chimney fire.’

Lawson added, ‘Think, if you’ve used a lot more fuel than usual this winter, then you’ve obviously used the fire more. Consider having the chimney swept and your fire checked out for a second time.’

If you suspect a chimney fire, then get everyone to a safe place and call the fire service. If you have had a chimney fire, always have the chimney inspected before using it again.

The way you use your fire and fuel can make a big difference to deposits in your chimney and your sweep will be happy to advise.
